Design

I design attractive, accessible websites to suit a wide range of users. I use the latest standards of design: XHTML, CSS, PHP, MySQL, Javascript and XML.

Content management

A content management system (a.k.a. CMS) is something that allows people to edit their website without needing to know anything about web design. I've created my own version, called Jed, which I adapt for each website I design. Try it out with an online demo.

Service

I am available for web design and development, including graphic template design, application of template to XHTML and CSS, accessibility tweaks and PHP/MySQL or Javascript coding. I can be employed for a whole project or individual tasks. I also do graphic design in the form of advertisement posters, fliers, pamphlets, etc. Follow this link for my portfolio.

Get a quotation

To recieve a quotation for a web design or graphic design project, you can fill out my online request form. The details of your request will be sent straight to my email inbox, and you'll receive a reply with an estimation for your project.

Code writing, content management

The graphics for the site had already been designed but not yet applied to HTML. I wrote the code for the site, using strict XHTML and CSS. It was then integrated into my content management system so that it can be updated by anyone in the future.

Hi, I'm Jon Cairns

I'm a web designer and graphic designer who likes to create good-looking, accessible websites with XHTML, CSS, AJAX and PHP. I'm also a musician, photographer and student, and I live in Durham, up north in the UK. Use the links at the top of the page or just below to navigate my site, or read my blog to find out what's going on in my life.

Updates

  • 5th Jan Took old joncairns.com off the server, to begin the introduction of the new site. Spent many hours tweaking all aspects of the design, and adding the new content.
  • 22nd Dec Incorporated script.aculo.us ajax library for fun movement and minimise/maximise features. Try moving the stuff around in the banner at the top of the page!

"We're seeing higher standards on the web with each new day, much to my agreement. The days of suffering lime green text sprawled across a slightly-off-lime-green background lightly infused with vomit coloured blobs seem to have been left behind in the '90s. I think we're all grateful for that."
